Vavar Juma Masjid is a revered Islamic shrine situated in Erumeli, a small town in Kerala’s Kottayam district. This mosque holds immense cultural and spiritual significance, particularly for its association with the Sabarimala pilgrimage, one of South India’s most important religious journeys.

The mosque is dedicated to Vavar Swamy, a legendary Muslim warrior believed to be a close companion of Lord Ayyappa. According to folklore, Vavar and Ayyappa developed a bond of deep mutual respect, which continues to inspire interfaith harmony among devotees even today.
One of the most unique traditions observed at Vavar Juma Masjid is the visit by Sabarimala pilgrims, who stop here to pay their respects before proceeding to the Ayyappa temple. This symbolic act is an enduring example of Kerala’s syncretic culture and religious coexistence.
Architecturally, the mosque is built in a simple and traditional Islamic style, offering a peaceful and welcoming environment. It remains a place of devotion for both Muslims and Hindus, especially during the pilgrimage season.
