Kadappattoor Mahadeva Temple Kottayam

Kadappattoor Mahadeva Temple (Malayalam: കടപ്പാട്ടൂർ ശ്രീ മഹാദേവക്ഷേത്രം) is a 1000 year old Lord Shiva temple situated on the banks of the Meenachil River near Pala in Kottayam district of Kerala.

The temple is situated in a serene and beautiful location, surrounded by lush green trees and vegetation. The temple complex consists of a sanctum sanctorum, an inner courtyard, and an outer courtyard.

Temple Significance

The stone idol of Lord Shiva is noteworthy and is unique. Kadappattoor Mahadeva Temple is the only temple in Kerala where Lord Shiva is worshipped in a Swaroopa Vigraha (murti or Vigraham). In all other Shiva temples in Kerala, Shiva is worshipped in Linga form.

The stone murti worshipped in the temple is Nagabhushana Lingam and has the image of Shiva carved on it. The murti was found under an Athimaram (fig tree) here.

Mahadeva is known here as Kadappattoorappan, the God of Kadappattoor.

Temple Specialities

Kadappattoor Shiva Temple is an important Idathavalam (pilgrimage shelter) for the Sabarimala pilgrims. Every year during Sabarimala pilgrimage time, thousands of devotees visit the Kadappattoor temple on their way to Sabarimala. The excellent facilities for staying in a serene atmosphere with ample space around the temple attracts Sabarimla pilgrims to this temple.

Alangad Sangham, a major participant of famous Erumely Pettathullal (a devotional dance, performed by the pilgrims) perform the Paanaka Pooja at this temple on Dhanu 26th (January ).

Ganapathy, Ayyappa, Nagadevathas, Bhagavathy (Badrakali) and Brahma Rakshass are the upadevathas of Kadappattoor temple. The temple is also known for its beautiful architecture and intricate carvings, which are a testament to the craftsmanship of the artisans of the region. Temple Festivals

The annual festival is celebrated in the Malayalam month of Meenam (March - April). The festival, known as Mahadeva Vilakku, is a ten-day long celebration that attracts thousands of devotees from all over the state. The festival features various rituals, cultural programs, and fireworks, which create a festive and lively atmosphere in the temple and its surroundings.
