Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary in Kottayam, spread over 14 acres, is home to a variety of migratory and resident bird species. Set in the Kerala Backwaters, this is a must-visit destination for bird lovers and nature enthusiasts. River Kavanar and Vembanad Lake flow near the bird sanctuary. The place is considered ‘Garden of Eden’ for Ornithologists.
Bird Species Found
Kumarakom Sanctuary is home to several migratory bird species such as the Siberian crane, egret, heron, teal, gull, tern, and flycatcher. Some of the migratory birds come from the Himalayas, and a few from Siberia.
The sanctuary also has a large population of resident birds such as several species of kingfishers, Indian Darter, different species of egrets and herons, White Ibis, parrots, woodpecker, wood beetle, larks, water duck, Little Cormorant, owl, and cuckoo.
Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is an important bird conservation area and has been designated as a protected area by the Government of India. The sanctuary is managed by the Kerala Forest Department and is committed to the conservation and preservation of bird species and their habitats.
Neighbouring areas such as Kaipuzha Muttu, Pathirmanal, Narakathara, Thollairam Kayal, and Poothanpandi Kayal are also good locations for spotting birds.
The sanctuary was formerly known as Baker's Estate. The place was developed in a rubber plantation as a bird sanctuary by Englishman George Alfred Baker.
Best Time to Visit Kumarakom
The sanctuary is open throughout the year, but the best time for bird watching is between June and August. To watch Migratory birds, November to February is the best time.

Duration: It took around 3 hours to enjoy the whole trip. Visitors to the sanctuary can enjoy bird watching, take a leisurely walk through the scenic trails, and relax amidst the tranquil surroundings.
One can also hire houseboats or motorboats for bird watching cruises on the lake.
