Located near the serene Vembanad Lake, Vaikom Mahadeva Temple is one of the most revered Shiva temples in Kerala. It lies about 33 km from Kottayam and 40 km from Ernakulam, nestled in the town of Vaikom. The temple holds immense historical and religious importance and is often referred to as the “Kasi of the South.”

The temple is surrounded by natural beauty, with green paddy fields, coconut groves, and waterways creating a peaceful atmosphere. The large temple complex, with its impressive gopurams and traditional Kerala-style architecture, is a visual treat. Vaikom Mahadeva Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, worshipped here as Vaikkathappan. It is believed to be one of the oldest temples in Kerala, with a history that dates back over 1,000 years. The Shiva Linga here is considered ‘Swayambhu’ (self-manifested), adding to the temple’s sanctity.
The temple is famous for the Vaikathashtami Festival, celebrated annually in November or December. The 12-day festival draws thousands of devotees who participate in rituals, processions, and cultural events. Other major festivals include Maha Shivaratri and Pradosham, observed with great devotion.

How to Reach
By Road:Vaikom is well connected by road to major towns and cities in Kerala. Regular buses operate from Kottayam (33 km), Ernakulam (40 km), and Alappuzha (45 km). Private taxis and autos are also available.
By Train:The nearest railway station is Vaikom Road Railway Station (VARD), about 7 km from the temple. For better connectivity, Kottayam Railway Station (33 km) and Ernakulam Junction (40 km) are more convenient.
